In this series of classes led by teaching artist Kristen MacCarthy, participants will draw inspiration from Rachel Hayes’ installation “Looking through a Sewn Sky,” learn the basics of color theory and experiment with abstraction by creating their own layered watercolor paintings. Through guided exercises, we’ll explore mixing hues, overlapping translucent washes and incorporating line to evoke space and depth.
By the end of the workshop, each participant will have a unique abstract watercolor piece that captures a memory of a sacred space.
All materials are provided, and no prior watercolor experience is necessary — just bring your curiosity and a willingness to explore the poetic possibilities of color.
$20 for Donating-level members; $30 for all others. Space is limited and registration is required. This workshop will be held April 9, 16 and 23, 6 – 8 p.m.
Kristen MacCarthy runs the K.A. Artist Shop in Athens, Georgia, which she considers her perennial work of art. She spends much of her time in the shop’s service wing photographing fabric pieces, ceramics and paintings, as well as stretching canvases, preparing custom supply kits, and printing archival reproductions for regional and national artists. A graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in studio art and a minor in philosophy, MacCarthy is a perpetual learner and a devoted lover of color and aesthetics. Her favorite mediums include graphite, oil paint, watercolor and ink. Since opening the K.A. Artist Shop in 2014, MacCarthy has taught numerous classes there and has also led workshops and events at the Cobb Galleria, the Georgia Museum of Art and the University of Georgia. Always eager to connect with Athens’ creative community, she has participated in a variety of local art-centered events and creativity summits and has served as a juror for the ATHFest Artist Market and the OCAF Annual Members’ Show.
