Studio Sessions: Sketching from Life

Travel back in time during this life drawing workshop inspired by artwork on view in In the City of Light: Paris, 1850–1920. Featured within the exhibition is the idea of the Parisienne, the elegant Parisian woman whose inimitable sense of fashion and personal style continues to inform discourses about femininity and beauty. Depicted in text and image, generalized or individualized, she is put on display for the viewer’s admiration, flaunting extravagant fashions and enjoying high-brow entertainments and leisure activities as representative of her successful husband or lover.
In this studio workshop, we will have our own Parisienne on display—a live figure model dressed in the garb of a nineteenth-century woman. Facilitated by Larkin Ford, visiting instructor of studio and visual art at Oxford College of Emory University, this studio workshop will focus on strengthening figure drawings using simple geometrical forms. Beginning with a loosely accurate silhouette, we will focus on the simple blocky shapes of the body. Using these underlying shapes as our guide, we can draw the body as a solid, three-dimensional form. At the end of the workshop, we will have an opportunity to share with our fellow classmates and receive instructor feedback.
Studio Sessions are art-making workshops connected to artworks on view at the High that provide an opportunity to experiment, play, and enjoy dabbling with new mediums and materials. No prior experience is required. Studio Sessions are designed for adults, but all ages are welcome. This workshop is offered three times.
