Opera@Morgan (of Morgan State University), in collaboration with Peabody Opera Theatre (of Johns Hopkins University) present an English language opera by Kurt Weill, "Street Scene." The opera takes place over two days in front of a tenement building in New York City during a sweltering summer. It depicts the lives, struggles, and dreams of the immigrant working-class families who live there. "Street Scene" is often described as a “Broadway opera” because it blends operatic technique with jazz, blues, and American popular song. The work is based on Elmer Rice’s Pulitzer Prize–winning 1929 play of the same name, with lyrics by Langston Hughes.
