About this Event
Join us for a very special Saturday storytime to celebrate the launch of There's a Pigeon in My Kitchen!, local author Peter Hallberg and illustrator Carlie R. Houser's debut picture book about New York City's most prominent creature!
Books will be available for purchase at the event, with an opportunity for signing and personalization from the author!
About the book
In the middle of the night, a pigeon landed outside Peter’s window in Gramercy. He got out of bed to shoo it away, stepping into the kitchen. Alex, sleepy-eyed, asked “What? Did you think there was a pigeon in your kitchen?” When the light bulb went off and the two returned to bed, Alex suggested that Peter write a book. He fell asleep thinking about what that might look like, and the rest was history.
Every animal and scenario referenced in this story has truthful origins in the New York City experiences of Peter and others. There’s a Pigeon in My Kitchen! is a journey through the five boroughs, a safari for the reader to encounter all of the creatures one might run into living in the Big Apple. We hope these pages bring you as much enjoyment as we had in creating them.
About the author
Peter is a fashion and wardrobe stylist based in New York City for the last 5 years. Through his many adventures running around town, he was inspired to share what living in the concrete jungle is like with his long distance niece, Elsie. Although this is his debut book, he has always had a knack for creative writing, often sharing poems and speeches with friends and family. The liveliness of the characters and creatures of NYC became the perfect muse for this story to come to life.
About the illustrator
Carlie is an illustrator and ceramic artist living in Brooklyn. Before turning to freelance (with, of course, some restaurant work on the side), she had the privilege of learning about bespoke bookmaking as an assistant editor at New York City’s Melcher Media. There’s a Pigeon in My Kitchen! is the first book she’s illustrated, and over the last year has fallen in love with the process. She looks forward to making more stories come to life.
