About the Text and Author
Unable to endure the sexual violence of her husband, Lin Shi kills the pig butcher with his own instrument–a meat cleaver.
Known as one of the most controversial pieces of Taiwanese fiction, The Butcher’s Wife is set in the author’s hometown, Lukang. Li Ang cleverly weaves the doomed fate of Lin Shi with the animals of the butcher trade. While pigs are led to the slaughterhouse and consumed, Lin Shi is sold off by her uncle as a sex object for a new husband. Though the primary antagonist may appear to be the abusive husband, the moral condemnations and deeply rooted misogyny of Lin Shi’s world are far more violent.
Li Ang was born in Lukang, a coastal city in central Taiwan. She began writing at 16 and is known for her idiosyncratic, candid, and penetrating insights on gender politics in contemporary Taiwan.
Li Ang first gained international prominence with her 1983 novella The Butcher's Wife. Her writings have been transformed into TV shows and films. To this day, Li Ang's work remains influential in feminist literature and offers a critical yet profound examination of gender-based power dynamics and Taiwanese social structures.
