The monuments at Elmwood Cemetery are more than stone. They are carefully carved messages left behind by families who wanted their loved ones to be remembered and understood. Wreaths, scrolls, clasped hands, grapes, anchors, doves, flowers, and countless other symbols appear throughout the cemetery, each with a meaning and a story. What were these symbols meant to say?
Join Elmwood staff member Amanda Zorn for the Stories of Stone walking tour and learn how to read the language of the monuments. As you explore the historic grounds, Amanda will explain the symbolism, artistry, and traditions behind these striking memorials and reveal what they can tell us about faith, hope, love, and remembrance.
The tour begins at 10:00 am on April 18th and lasts approximately 90 minutes. It will focus on the west side of the cemetery, home to many of Elmwood’s largest and most impressive monuments. Weather appropriate clothing and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Admission is $20 per person, and registration is required.
