The CMPCR Annual Public Lecture in Media and Citizenship

Stop Press! Reporting the News in 2026

This year's speaker is Natalie Fahy - Senior Editor of Nottinghamshire Live.

Speaking truth unto power is the fundamental role of journalism. Natalie will be talking about the ongoing challenges and opportunities of doing so at a time local news is being squeezed by technology, digital platforms and a changing business model.

Nottinghamshire Live has faced the particular challenges of dealing with a Reform-led County Council, plus the heartbreak of the Valdo Calocane case and the ongoing public inquiry into the handling of it.

The lecture is free to attend and is a public event.

Doors open at 5.30 and it will begin at 6pm, lasting approx 45 mins with some time for questions and a drinks reception.

Travel:

  • The nearest tram stop is Lace Market and it is close to Nottingham train station and bus stops.
  • The nearest car park is the Lace Market car park on Pilcher Gate

Natalie Fahy has more than 20 years experience in journalism and, as well as being at the helm in Nottingham, she is in charge at Lincolnshire Live and has additional responsibility for the Derby Telegraph. She is also the Regional Editor-in-Chief of London and the East of England for Reach Plc.

This lecture is the third annual public lecture organised by the Centre for Media, Politics and Communication Research at the University of Nottingham. Previous speakers were Eliot Higgins of Bellingcat and the BBC Radio 4 journalist and author, Phil Tinline.
