This free program for high school students features rotating events along our 600-mile range exploring various realms of conservation.
About this Event

Join Año Nuevo State Park and The Marine Mammal Center as we explore a natural breeding ground for one of the Center’s most common patients – elephant seals! Through this event you will learn more about these amazing creatures, how both organizations work to care for them in their natural environment and at the Center’s hospital, and better understand the role they play in our ocean ecosystem. We hope by the end of this event you will have a stronger understanding and appreciation of elephant seals, and will have some goals for next steps to take on your conservation journey.

We can sign for Community Service hours if you need us to!

Free lunch and snacks will be provided

Accessibility notes:

  • Walking along the coast for 90 minutes, sometimes on uneven ground such as sand, with some stops along the way.
  • Minimal protection from the weather during the entire event.
  • May see adult male elephant seals battling for mating rights which could include seeing blood.
  • May witness mating between elephant seals.
  • May witness deceased animals.
  • Ticks and poison oak may be present during this event.

Parking notes:

  • Parking is free for this event. We will be sending you a confirmation letter before January 25th that you will need to share at the entrance station to ensure you receive free parking.

  • Driver note: Adult drivers of youth are welcome to drop youth off and come back at the end of the event, or explore the local area during this time.
