About this Event
Each year, MDC's George O'White State Nursery collects or buys tens of thousands of pounds of seeds each summer and fall. For example, about 2,000 bushels of walnuts, 6,000 pounds of white oak acorns, 500 pounds of hazelnuts and 500 pounds of plum seed are needed just to establish seedlings for these four species. They can't do it alone- members of the public are encouraged to help collect and bring in seeds each year to help to grow bareroot native tree and shrub seedlings that are essential for Reforestation, Erosion control, Wildlife food and cover, Stream bank stabilization, and education.
Join Forest ReLeaf and the Forestkeeper program as we go over the State Nursery's history and how volunteers and landowners can help support its program and our organizations goals through seed collection. Take home an early copy of the Forestkeeper Program's new 'Seed Collector's guide' and go over desirable species identification and ripeness indicators. If the birds leave any, we'll collect serviceberry after the short presentation.
