The Open Space Authority is pleased to work with the San Jose Astronomical Association (SJAA) to co-host a community star party at Rancho Cañada del Oro Open Space Preserve. Just 25 minutes south of downtown San José, this location features night skies so dark you can see the band of our Milky Way galaxy in the summer!
Telescopes will be provided along with docent astronomers to help you find amazing features in the night sky. Please do not bring your own telescope (binoculars are welcome, but please no tripods). SJAA official club members will set up their telescopes to help you get the most knowledge and enjoyment out of the truly dark starry night sky. During the event you are welcome to move freely from telescope to telescope, each one looking at a different feature in the sky.

This is a family-friendly event! Although younger children are welcome, this activity is best suited for children 5 years and older. Please remember - no smoking, alcohol, or pets allowed at this preserve.
Dress in warm layers (it gets cold at night). Please bring a flashlight with a redlight option and bring water to drink.
Arrive no later than 9:45 pm, as the gates will be closed then to allow for a better viewing experience for everyone involved. Please sign in at our table when you arrive. There is extra parking up the road in the overflow parking lot, and a trail will be marked with lights to lead you back to the viewing area.
