The abyssal depths open as obscure death metal is unleashed upon Europe. Australia's Stargazer and Germany's Drowned will offer some of their rare live performances on the following dates, presented by Absurde Rituale & Inhale Spirits Music:
Over twenty-five years ago, in Adelaide, Australia, guitarist Denny Blake (Martire, Cauldron Black Ram, Misery’s Omen) founded StarGazer after the inital demise of the short-lived but locally influential death metal band, Intellect Devourer, along with bassist Damon Good (Mournful Congregation, Cauldron Black Ram, Martire). From the outset, the union of Blake (aka The Serpent Inquisitor) and Good (aka The Great Righteous Destroyer) was alchemical, a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Live, StarGazer are nothing short of awe-inspiring. The helical coil of the guitar and serpentine bass, each animated and independent, wind around the ecstatic tumult of percussion, summoned together in a way that almost defies belief. This year, StarGazer will tour Europe for the 2nd time with support by legends, Drowned.

Surely the Berlin trio could now sell themselves as a supergroup, as “members of Necros Christos (R.I.P.), Essenz (R.I.P.?) and The Ruins Of Beverast” and for fans of these three bands. But that would overlook the fact that DROWNED are the longest-running of these bands. And that the release date of a new album, only their second, is more special than a World Cup final. You'd have to keep tally sheets outside the delivery rooms, exactly nine months later. Although the band is compared to practically everything else that has been released on their label, they have retained their very own groove: anyone who liked “Idola Specus” will love “Procul His.” The vocal lines are more arrhythmic, the riffs more morbid, the atmosphere dirtier. Patrick Engel (Temple Of Disharmony) has created a reverb-poor garage sound that spreads a Chapel Of Ghouls vibe from the first to the last second and sounds as old-school dirty as it does spacious and mature. Underground fetishists can ponder whether “Corpse God” is a nod to another recently disbanded black metal band, or simply raise their fists to the upbeat parts of “Chryseos Vas.”

SPANCER was formed in early 1999 as a doom metal band drawing inspiration from various doom styles (traditional, sludge, stoner, extreme) and beyond (70s rock, psych/kraut, heavy metal, hardcore, death metal). The band has always consisted of the same members, and that's how it should stay forever.
SPANCER operate as a DIY band without any commercial ambitions and with very little self-promotion, simply because that's their way. There is no affectation and no calculation, no thought is wasted on clichés or formulas. SPANCER just carry on doing their thing and follow their own path, wherever it may lead. The result may or may not impress you personally, but that's just the way it is.
