Presenter Heather Butler, assistant professor and head of the Biology Department at Virginia Western Community College, will discuss pesticide residue on retail greenhouse plants.
Attendees will learn strategies for:
- Identifying nurseries that practice pollinator-safe management.
- Having conversations with other nurseries about steps they can take to reduce the use of pesticides.
Consumers assume that when we purchase native plants at our local greenhouse or big-box store greenhouses they are safe for pollinators. However a study conducted by the Xerces Society found that many of these plants come with pesticide residues at levels harmful to native pollinators. Ms. Butler also will give a summary of the data.
This event is free and open to the public. No ticket purchase necessary. Clean Valley Council is located inside Heights Community Church, and the event will be in the church Welcome Center.
