Stand Up Level Two: Building Your Longer Set

In this seven week course, students will build upon the writing and performance skills developed in Stand Up Level One. The first hour of each week’s class will cover an advanced topic relevant to the developing comic. In the second half of each class, students will pitch and workshop new material.  As students develop their ten minute set, feedback from the instructor will focus on set structure, developing a natural flow for a longer performance, and finding each performer’s unique comedic voice. This class culminates in a student showcase where each student will perform a ten minute set.

The prerequisite for this class is Stand Up Level One at Stomping Ground Comedy Theater or, in exceptional cases, completion of equivalent training elsewhere or significant existing experience in stand up comedy with permission of the Training Center Director and instructor.

Topics in this course may include:

• Creating a personal brand and promotion
• Crowdwork and dealing with hecklers
• Changing your setlist on the fly
• Increasing laughs per minute and leaving audiences wanting more
• Using open mics to develop new material
• Ad-libbing and knowing when and how to go off-script
• Hosting a show and producing and promoting your own shows

This is a 7 week recurring in-person course held Thursdays, 7-9:30pm starting Thursday, March 6th. The instructor is David Parsons. All sales are final. Listed price of class does not include Eventbrite's service fee (3.7% + $1.79) and payment processing fee (2.9%) which will be added to the total price at checkout. Classes are non-refundable but enrollment may be deferred to a future class with TCD approval. All students must adhere to policies in the Stomping Ground Student Handbook. Must be 18 years or older.
