AV Art Society Presents: THE DOCKA Curated Documentary Screening Series
We’re so excited to finally share The Dock - a new documentary screening series built around gathering, good conversations, and stories that deserve to be seen. We’re launching our first screening in partnership with The Gallery of Art, and we couldn’t imagine a better space to start.
Our first Dock screening is Stalking the Big Cat of Georgia, the latest documentary from Georgia Filmmaker, Hal Jacobs about Baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Mize.
This is their Florida Premiere!
The film follows author Jerry Grillo’s decades-long journey to tell the story of baseball legend Johnny Mize and the parallel legacy of Negro League star James “Red” Moore - opening a powerful conversation about race, recognition, and the stories Southern history has too often overlooked.
“Mize spent 15 seasons slugging for the Cardinals, New York Giants, and finally with the New York Yankees, who won a record five straight World Series (1949-1953) with Mize as their ace in the hole, the best pinch hitter in the American League.
Mize grew up in the racist Jim Crow South. But in the off-season he played with and against some of the greatest Black athletes and Negro Leaguers of the day - this during an era when it was illegal in the Deep South for Blacks and Whites to play on the same field together. He played alongside Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio and a young Mickey Mantle, but when asked to name the greatest player he ever saw, Mize named the Cuban-born Martín Dihigo who he played with in the early 1930s.”
