The North Carolina Baroque Orchestra (NCBO) a period instrument ensemble was established in 2011 for the purpose of providing orchestral and chamber music opportunities for musicians specializing in baroque performance practice. The program for St. Paul’s Abendmusik concert features works for choir organ and strings including settings of the Advent chorale Nun komm der Heiden Heiland by Michael Praetorius and Samuel Scheidt; Canite tuba by Jacob Handl; and J.S Bach’s Cantata 140 Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme plus selections from his Christmas Oratorio; as well as instrumental music for organ and strings. The ensemble will be led by Christian Crocker St. Paul’s Director of Music.

Christian Crocker comments “Abendmusik or evening music was a popular series of concerts performed in St. Mary’s Church in Lübeck Germany during the 17th and 18th centuries. For our Abendmusik presentation we are excited to welcome the North Carolina Baroque Chamber Players performing on instruments of the period as they join forces with members of the St. Paul’s Choir to recreate the spirit of these performances for our annual Advent candlelight concert welcoming the season with the beauty of music for choir organ and instruments. Our aim in the Artist Series at St. Paul’s is to present music of the highest quality reflecting the beauty of our great Creator In artistry. We hope you will join us to experience this glorious music in our beautiful space.“
