The Seven Last Words of Christ by Franz Joseph Haydn was written in 1786 for a dramatic Good Friday service at the Oratorio de la Santa Cueva in Cádiz, Spain. The music originally accompanied sermons on each of Christ’s final sayings from the cross in a darkened church. Haydn later adapted the work into several forms; the version heard today uses the English choral setting with accompaniment based on the string quartet version.Free and Open to the Public, with a goodwill offering at the door.
