Yvette Andrewartha (vocals) Martin Jenkins (keyboards) and Nigel Wayne (Saxophone) will be giving lyrical and melodic renditions of great jazz classics in the gorgeous surroundings of this fabulous historic building in the centre of Okehampton.
Yvette is a Devon based jazz vocalist with a passion for bringing the Great American Songbook to life: think of all those wonderful swing, ballad and bossa numbers - sung by Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Horn, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Diane Krall, Liane Carroll, Jamie Callum and Michael Buble.
Yvette’s voice has been likened to that of Helen Merrill or Julie London described as contraltos with
warm, husky intimate tones.
Martin Jenkins is one of the 'go to' keyboard players of the whole of the South West. He has been a feature on the south west jazz circuit in various musical combos over the last 20 years.
In 2010 a collaboration with Bristol-based saxophonist Craig Crofton saw the release of the first album from their band Freight, consisting mainly of Martin’s Monk inspired compositions. This was followed up by a second album in 2014 featuring compositions by Martin and Craig. Martin relocated from Bristol to Devon in 2015 and is currently performing regularly with the Neil Burns Organ Trio who have worked with The Haggis Horns
and UK jazz artists Steve Waterman and Roger Beaujolais. Other artists Martin has been fortunate to work with over the years in a live or recording context include Tommaso Starace, Tina May, Gareth Lockrane, Zoe Francis, Charlie Jones, David Rhodes, David “Pic” Conley and the late guitarist Frank Evans.
Nigel Wayne has a style on tenor sax which evokes lyricism and purity of tone having played locally with a variety of Jazz Blues and Soul bands over the last 25 years. Mentors like Gareth Lockrane, Alan Barnes, Will Paley, and periods spent in his early saxophone career with big band leaders Norman Langford, Brian Morley and Geoff Gough amongst others have seen Nigel develop a style which crosses effortlessly between big band funk soul and melodic jazz. Currently playing with Moor Jazz and Jive Junction, Nigel can regularly be seen around the area supporting and having fun with music.
