Spanish missionary St. Francis Xavier, a founder of the Jesuits and our patron, brought Christianity and trade goods to Japan in 1549. A small church grew there, but in 1597, Japan's ruler outlawed Christianity and ordered the crucifixion of 26 men in Nagasaki. The Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of St. Paul Miki and Companions each year on Feb. 6.As a St. Francis Xavier parishioner, Kristie Kiesel spent time at this site. She will share insights from the culture and the site's archeological dig, along with Japanese culinary treats.
