THE WITCHCRAFT SERIES
In 1682, three women of Bideford, Devon were condemned for witchcraft, and hanged at Heavitree in Exeter. Temperance Lloyd, Susannah Edwards and Mary Trembles were the last three people known to have been executed for witchcraft in England, with a fourth woman, Alice Molland, thought to have died in jail.
Textile artist Anne Jackson, inspired by this discovery, has engaged in a long-term project of research, commemoration and exploration of the metaphors surrounding the idea of witchcraft, in history and contemporary culture.
She has produced a series of large and small scale works in knotted tapestry, reflecting upon the lengths to which humans can go in distrusting each other, the fantasies that can be produced by individuals and communities in fear of “the other” or the outsider, and the results which, historically at least, could be deadly.
Her works are based in research into individual witch trials, and European witch-trial history, making use of primary historical texts whenever possible. Her method of working is a personal hybrid technique of Gobelins tapestry and knotting. Her aim is to create works which are visually rich, or seductive, with undercurrents of thought-provoking darkness.
Anne will speak about “The Witchcraft Series”, showing the history, development and progression of her project, and outlining the thinking behind the works.
