Squirrel Flower is the witch rock project of Ella Williams. Currently based in Chicago, by way of Iowa and Boston, Ella crafts songs from silk threads, weaving layers of vocal arrangements and sparse, sometimes distorted guitar with sentient observations about internal and external worlds.
The Chicago-based artist Sofia Jensen make considered folk rock under the name Free Range, mature confessionals feel as simple as flicking on a light switch when the sun starts to set. Jensen’s delivery is gentle, even when their lyrics untangle stormy thoughts. It’s a kind of openness and ease heard in Jeff Tweedy’s or Ben Gibbard’s writing, unveiling comfort in dark truths.
Dallas singer-songwriter Alex Montenegro is the artist behind the intimate and warm Skirts, whose indie folk is so gentle and soothing that it becomes an idyll of its own.
