Squawkin' Sports: Spring Baseball Edition!
Hosted by Patrick Sauer & David J. Roth
Featuring authors Chris Donnelly and Christian Sheppard
Tickets starting at $11
Created and hosted by writers Patrick Sauer and David J. Roth, Squawkin’ Sports is an ongoing series featuring book chats with authors who write about playing games. This month, Sauer and Roth chat with Chris Donnelly, author of Get Your Tokens Ready: The Late 1990s Road to the Subway Series, and Christian Sheppard, author of The Ancient Wisdom of Baseball: Lessons for Life from Homer's Odyssey to the World Series—both books that are about far more than just the sport.
Starting with the first ever regular season matchup between the Mets and Yankees and ending with the last out of the 2000 Subway Series, Donnelly's Get Your Tokens Ready provides the most in-depth look ever published at both teams during the late 1990s and the 2000 season. Detailing the moments you remember and some you may have forgotten—from fake mustaches to all-out melees, from wild pitch endings to thrown bat insanity, from heartache to celebration—Get Your Tokens Ready covers it all.
In The Ancient Wisdom of Baseball, Sheppard interweaves Homer's epics with glorious stories from the green fields of America's pastime, celebrating Achilles' courage and Odysseus' cunning along with the virtues of Hall of Fame players such as Jackie Robinson and Babe Ruth and of great teams such as the 2004 Red Sox and the 2016 Cubs. Along the way, Sheppard humorously recollects trying to raise his baby daughter true to the teachings of ancient myth and his beloved game. The result—an endearing, insightful, and inspiring guide to cultivating virtue and becoming the hero of your own life's odyssey.
