Description

What does it really mean to make your research sustainable?
Not in theory — but in the everyday decisions you make:
the methods you choose, the way you travel, the data you collect, the food you provide, and the impact you create.
SPROUT returns with a bold, practice-focused session bringing together PGRs, ECRs and academics across disciplines to move beyond surface-level conversations and explore sustainability as something that is designed, negotiated and lived within research.

This session is also linked to the wider vision of Harmony, the idea that human systems flourish when they work in balance with people, place and the natural world. Inspired by the principles of connection, balance, responsibility and care, SPROUT will explore how researchers can bring a Harmony lens into their work: not as an abstract ideal, but as a practical way of making better decisions throughout the research process.

This session combines two short, high-impact keynotes with a reflective, discussion-led workshop, creating space to think critically, share experiences, and challenge assumptions about what sustainable research really looks like.
You’ll hear from:
Professor Denise Baden (University of Southampton)
Embedding Sustainability in Research Practice: Decisions, Trade-offs and Impact
Exploring how sustainability can be embedded in research through responsible decision-making, practical trade-offs, and everyday research practices, with a focus on real-world impact.
Peter Jeff (PGR)
Sustainable Eating in Research: Practical Food Choices We Can Make
Researchers are key to driving sustainability, yet food choices — from daily habits to research settings and outreach — carry a significant environmental impact that is often overlooked. This session introduces the Planetary Health Diet (EAT-Lancet) as a practical framework and explores how researchers can make more sustainable choices across key contexts, including home, meetings, conferences and research design.

Rather than asking researchers to be perfect, this event asks:

How can we make research more harmonious — with communities, ecosystems, institutions, resources, and future generations?

Through two short, high-impact keynotes and a reflective, discussion-led workshop, participants will be invited to think critically, share experiences and explore the real trade-offs involved in sustainable research practice.
