It is perhaps appropriate that the Metallic Casket Company factory complex wraps around two sides of Springfield’s oldest cemetery. This land, set aside by James Demint in 1801, is the eternal resting place for Springfield’s earliest residents, including Demint himself. Join historian Kevin Rose on a walk of this hallowed ground and hear the stories of fearless female pioneers, Revolutionary War soldiers, and a member of the Boston Tea Party. Afterward we will visit Mother Stewart’s Brewery, housed in a restored section of the Metallic Casket factory, for one of their prized beers. Meet outside the brewery, 102 West Columbia Street.

About the Summer Tour Series:
Kevin Rose, historian at the Turner Foundation, created the Summer Tour Series in 2004 to build awareness of Springfield’s built environment. Then called the Summer Walking Tour Series, it featured eight guided walks of popular neighborhoods and districts in Springfield, Ohio. The series has more than doubled in size over the past 20 years, now encompassing 14-20 guided tours in and around the Greater Springfield Region. A dynamic committee of community volunteers oversees the creation and management of the series.
