Spring Series: Writing and Radical Self-Love

This spring, we’ll continue to riff on the theme of our current art exhibit, Bodies and Faces, featuring artist Suzanne Pickett—this time with a new literary inspiration. We’ll be reading The Body Is Not an Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor, a powerful text that invites us to love ourselves and our bodies (Our Bodies, Ourselves!) while also offering practical ways radical self-love can become part of the world’s healing process right now.

This offering is our full 12-week Spring Series. Over the course of the semester, we’ll explore writing as a tool for embodied awareness, self-acceptance, and collective healing, using Taylor’s work alongside poetry, prose, and carefully curated writing prompts. We will work in large groups for generative writing and break into thoughtfully gathered small groups for critique and feedback opportunities. We will also use the book The Magic Words: by Joseph Fasano for creativity exercises. Both books are optional.

The series is rooted in our year-long theme of Bodies and Faces and reflects the same circle-based process that defines all Women Writing for (a) Change® classes: deep listening, brave sharing, and thoughtful response within a supportive community. Whether you are new to our work or returning, this series offers a sustained, meaningful container for your writing life.

The year will culminate in an international retreat to Italy for those who wish to take their writing—and their sense of adventure—to new heights. Alongside experiencing “bodies and faces” in the museums of Florence, we’ll also engage in our own healing work through writing in a restorative garden setting.

This 12-week series offers a welcoming introduction to the Women Writing for (a) Change® process—used by thousands of women nationwide since 1991 to express authentic voice through writing and community-building. We’ll use prompts, poetry, and prose to explore a range of writing techniques.

Experienced writer?
This series provides time and structure to deepen your craft within a small, trusted circle. Bring any project you’re working on and expect thoughtful, supportive feedback designed to help you grow as a writer—while staying connected to your embodied voice.

Background

Women Writing for (a) Change® was founded in 1991 by Mary Pierce Brosmer, a practicing poet and former English teacher. She created WWf(a)C to help women find their voices, speak their truths, and tell their stories in a world where they were often silenced (womenwriting.org).

The Jacksonville-affiliated school was established in 2014 by Jennifer Wolfe, became a nonprofit in 2018, and has since grown to include 11 certified facilitators (certified in 2019, 2023, and 2025). Our intention is to continue expanding access and outreach to a wider, more diverse community.
