About this Event

The Only Animal's Spring Season Crochet Warm Up

<h4>Connect with climate care, enjoy slow practice & yarn camaraderie!</h4>

The Only Animal is working with communities across B.C. to slowly create the textile performance environment for a new music theatre concert called .

We're hosting Slow Socials to invite the public to help us crochet, knit, knot, sew and natural dye parts of the set while using up our stash of salvaged and thrifted fibres.

Don't know how to crochet, knit, sew or dye? No problem! We're hosting a series of casual 'warm-ups' to share basic skills.

Our next Slow Social event is May 24th as part of the West Coast String Summit. This April and May, we'll be focussing on basic crochet skills, to help finish our 'slow calendar' (images below).

Everyone welcome, bring your own projects if you prefer. We’ll provide materials and hot tea.

Presented in partnership with The Public Swoon.

When:

Thursdays, April 18 - May 23

4:30 pm - 7:30 pm, Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, Room 4390

Where:

Cost:

The Crochet Warm Ups are free. Tea and materials provided.

About Barbara Adler

Barbara Adler is an interdisciplinary artist and performer, whose practice incorporates text, music, event making and design. The daughter and sister of Czech immigrants, Barbara now lives in xwesam, colonially known as Roberts Creek, on the unceded territories of the shíshálh and Skwxwu7mesh Nations. Her recent projects centre slow and process-led creation, using intricate textile objects to put a wrench in productivity culture and focus work around relational time and seasonal cycles. As a poet and musician, Barbara spent over a decade touring North America, Europe and rural B.C as a solo artist and with ensembles including The Fugitives, Proud Animal and Ten Thousand Wolves. Her writing and music have been presented through multiple solo and band albums, publication in spoken word anthologies, theatre and dance productions and performances at major music and literary festivals. Recent collaborators include theatre artist Kyla Gardiner (The Public Swoon), choreographer Lesley Telford (Inverso) and composer Leah Abramson. In her work as a programmer and producer, Barbara explores the potential for live performance and artist-led organizing to create an ethos of critique and care in the public sphere. In 2016, she joined Cole Schmidt and James Meger to create Sawdust Collector, a weekly performance series presenting new, experimental and improvised works by established and emerging artists. She holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies and a BA in Art and Cultural Studies, both from Simon Fraser University.

About The Only Animal's Slow Socials

The Only Animal’s Slow Socials are an ongoing series of gatherings for our communities to connect through relaxed textile creation, environmental readings, and musique d’ameublement ('furniture music'). Join our team in crocheting, knotting and knitting set pieces for a future show, bring your own craft work, or catch up on some social coziness.

Our next Slow Social will be Friday, May 24th as part of the West Coast String Summit,

featuring music by Toni-Leah C. Yake, Anju Singh and environmental readings by Julia Ulehla.
