The spring plant exchange is one of our oldest and most popular annual traditions. It is not a sale, but a community gathering and an opportunity for experienced native-plant gardeners to share both their expertise and their extra plants with those in the earlier stages of establishing a native landscape. Members and non-members alike are welcome. Information about Wild Ones membership will be available at the exchange.
The 2026 spring exchange is Sunday, May 31, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, at the home of Tom Small, 2502 Waite Ave, Kalamazoo. The gardens will provide an inspiring model as well as many plants for the exchange; more plants will be contributed by other KAWO members and supporters.
We will dedicate this plant exchange to Ruth Small, who passed away on April 13. During the plant exchange there will be a brief ceremony where friends can offer a few words of remembrance.
Bringing plants: if you have plants to bring, drop them off at the Smalls’ residence a day or two before the exchange if possible. Please bring only native plants, carefully potted and with the species clearly identified. Keep in mind that they may not be replanted right away. If you have a mature garden with extra plants and need help with digging and potting, post to our Facebook page.
Taking plants: you don’t have to bring a plant to take one, and experienced native-plant gardeners will be there to help you choose the right plant for your site. This year we ask that you take no more than 5 plants within the first two hours, to ensure that those arriving later in the afternoon have a selection of plants to choose from.
