About this Event
Watch as the migratory birds flutter about in the forest at Welsh Mountain Nature Preserve. Learn about the understory layer of shrubs in this forest and how they provide food and habitat. Observe species in bloom, and discuss pollinators as well as the geology and brief history of this region. Our hike will take us to the overlook for a peek at the valley below.
What to Expect: This 2.25-mile hike has only slight elevation change and is surprisingly level for being on a mountain. The surface is natural and uneven and can contain roots, rocks, and forest floor duff. There is a port-a-john available on site. This event is recommended for ages 10 and up (participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult).
What to Bring: Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are highly recommended. Bring water and a snack. Binoculars and hiking poles are optional.
Event Leader Bio: Mary Patterson is an Interpretive Ranger with the Lancaster Conservancy. She is passionate about wildflowers, butterflies, and all the wonderful things that can be discovered outside. Keenly in tune with the herbaceous plants that keep meadows and forest floors interesting, Mary also leads the local Susquehanna Nature Journal Club and is an active PA Master Naturalist.
Animal Policy: Service animals active or in training are welcome. Please leave all pets at home.
