Join Wild Birds Unlimited for a Guided Walk on Spring Migration with UNM PhD student Josiah Lavender at the Santa Fe Canyon Preserve! Tickets are only for the walk. A presentation open to all will be held afterward at 11am at the Wild Birds Unlimited shop (518-B Cordova Rd).
Every spring, millions of birds make journeys that are nearly unfathomable for us earthbound humans. They cross whole oceans, flying nonstop thousands of miles, using navigational systems that rival our most advanced technology. They arrive on their breeding grounds with exact timing to take advantage of an explosive increase in resources generated by the onset of the temperate summer. In the fall, they make a return trip, sometimes by a totally different path, to their wintering grounds. This annual round-trip journey has captured human imagination for centuries, and as early as 300 BCE, great thinkers such as Aristotle proposed theories to explain the avian “changing of the guard” that they observed with passing seasons. Today, we understand bird migration much better, but many aspects remain mysterious or at least debated, such as what mechanisms many species use to migrate and how migration evolved. In this presentation, Josiah will discuss the most remarkable bird migrations in the world, why birds migrate, how they navigate and sustain themselves on long nonstop flights, and how to attract migrating birds to your yard.
The guided walk will be held at the Santa Fe Canyon Preserve. See the map above for directions: from Upper Canyon Rd, take a left onto Cerro Gordo Rd and the trailhead parking lot will be immediately on your right.
