About this Event
Come and enjoy a three-hour guided foraging walk starting at Hove Lagoon, and along the coast to a nearby beach on the England Coast path. Be empowered with new knowledge on the array of wild edible plants available to us– and know those to avoid!
We will be looking at plants growing along the coast on the banks of the beach and in Hove lagoon, but to note this isn't about seaweed ID!
I will show you how to ID these plants safely, and plants to avoid, give advice on recipes, discuss any medicinal properties of plants we find, and little gems of information that have been passed down through folklore.
We will finish up with delicious wild plant snacks (which I'll make in advance) - all things that we're likely to find during our forage and maybe some other tasty foraged ingredients as well. (I am always foraging and so there will be a taste of the seasons)! Please advise me of any allergies/food preferences beforehand.
Bring water to drink and wear suitable clothing - it's impossible to predict what the weather will bring but let's hope for dry!
You may want to bring a container to collect any specimens to take home, but note this isn't a "fill your basket" event! It's more about learning how to ID plants and gain precious knowledge for your own future foraging.
We will start at Hove Lagoon and walk along the footpath to the nearest shingle beach where we will discover the many wild edible plants that grow in abundance!
There is a great cafe – the Big Beach cafe previously owned by DJ Fatboy Slim – at Hove Lagoon so you can have a nice lunch afterwards if you fancy. Or venture further east along to the beachfront Babble restaurant or west to Carat's cafe.
Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome. Children under 12 go free.
I am a verified forager and proud member of The Association of Foragers.
We will meet just inside the entrance to the Lagoon park on Kingsway - with the children's playground to your left and facing the sea and lagoon.
