Honoring 60 years of impact in our communities!
This year marks an incredible milestone - 60 years of service to adults and children with disabilities in our communities! Since 1966, Independence Association has walked alongside families, offering care, supports, and opportunities that help individuals thrive.
Sixty years in more than just a number. It represents generations of children who grew into confident adults, families who found hope, and communities that became stronger through inclusion and compassion.
Another reason to celebrate: Spindleworks is turning 50!
What began in 1976 with just six artists creating fiber arts has grown into two vibrant studios where more than 60 artists explore every medium imaginable. Spindleworks is more than an art center, it is a community of belonging, confidence, and purpose. Every day, artists lift each other up, share ideas, and create connections that reach far beyond our studio walls.
For half a century, artists with disabilities have come to our studios to paint, sculpt, weave, write, and express themselves freely and in doing so, they’ve transformed our communities.
Why your support matters
While much of Independence Association’s funding comes from government sources, it does not fully cover the true cost of delivering the high-quality, person-centered support our community deserves. Philanthropic support helps bridge this gap—ensuring individuals receive not just services, but opportunities to thrive, connect, and pursue their goals.
As the cost of providing care and community-based supports continues to rise, this funding gap grows wider. Events like Spring Fling make a critical difference, helping us sustain essential programs, invest in innovation, and continue building a more inclusive Maine for everyone.
