Join the Oregon East Symphony for its Spring Concert on Sunday, March 8 at 2:30 p.m. at the Vert Auditorium, featuring guest soloist trombonist John Neurohr.
The program opens with Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, a luminous and imaginative orchestral work inspired by classic fairy tales. With its delicate colors, playful dances, and moments of quiet wonder, the suite showcases Ravel’s masterful orchestration and storytelling through sound.
Also on the program is Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 in D Major, “London,” the composer’s final symphony and one of the great pillars of the classical repertoire. Full of wit, energy, and elegance, the London Symphony reflects Haydn at the height of his creative powers.
John Neurohr will be featured in two works that highlight the trombone’s versatility and expressive range. Nino Rota’s Trombone Concerto offers lyrical melodies and cinematic warmth from the famed Italian composer (The Godfather, La Dolce Vita, Romeo and Juliet). The concert concludes with Chiel Meijering’s Rock That Trombone, a high-energy contemporary work that blends classical technique with jazz and popular influences. This piece will feature a trombone ensemble made up of Neurohr’s former students from Central Washington University, adding a collaborative and celebratory finale to the program.
