Learn about the magic of natural dye & revamp some old pieces with indigo!
About this Event

Give your closet some new life this Spring at our Indigo Community Dye Bath! Participants will have the opportunity to dye a provided cotton tote bag with a shibori technique, and dye 1 or 2 pieces of clothing from their own closet (made of natural fibers).

Shibori is a Japanese textile art technique where fabric is manipulated and tied before being dyed to create intricate patterns.

Curriculum: In this workshop students will learn about indigo and natural dye, shibori techniques and how to treat dyed items.

Each student will be able to choose from a provided cotton tote bag to shibori tie and dye with indigo. Participants may also bring 1-2 items from their personal closet to dye in the vat. These items from home must be natural fibers WOOL, COTTON, LINEN, SILK. These items should also be a white or light color with no synthetic dyes used previously.

Class Structure: Hands-on workshop led by textile lover, Keelin Maloney. You will meet at The Nest between 11am and 5pm and your dye session will last 2 hours.

Date/Time: This workshop will be held Saturday, April 25th from11am-5pm with dying timeslots every two hours. Capacity is 4 attendees per time slot.

Dye baths require rest between dye sessions so there may be a wait of 30 mins in between. Please allow at least 2 hours for your session for soaking, dyeing, spraying and drying. Last time slot is 3pm. Items will need to dry after dyeing at The Nest. You will coordinate with Keelin, our workshop leader on the best way to pick up your items.

Who You Are: You have some old, maybe stained garments you would like to dye. You want to learn more about natural dyes!

What's Included: Indigo vat. One cotton tote bag to dye. Shibori materials.

What to Bring: 1 to 2 pieces of clothing from your closet (made of natural fibers) to dye in the vat.

Participant Outcomes: Participants will leave this workshop with a dyed tote bag, new pieces in their closet and the confidence to dye their own pieces at home.

Refunds will only be processed with 24 hours notice of the first workshop meeting date. Once the workshop starts all ticket sales are final.



Meet your teacher

Keelin is a Providence native, textile lover, and host of our knitting club! She has a background in hand knitting, machine knitting, weaving and natural dyeing. Her years in fine art school have lead her to create knit collections and participate in local sustainable fashion projects.
