Spring Butterfly Walk

Join London National Park City Rangers (some of whom also run Wild South London) on a walk to learn about the butterflies and other life that inhabit South London's rare chalk grassland.

Where and when to meet

Meet us across from New Addington Tram Station (What3Words///tamed.stay.closes). Please arrive for 10:45am or earlier if you wish to visit the shops or toilet facilities (see FAQs for further details).

What to expect

The walk will be hosted by London National Park City Rangers from Croydon, Sutton, and Bromley as part of the London Walking Festival.

We will explore two London Wildlife Trust reserves, Hutchinson’s Bank and Chapel Bank. As well as butterflies, we’ll listen and look for birds including chiffchaffs, green woodpeckers, and red kites. The chalky soil will be coming to life with rare orchids, yellow rattle, and carpets of bird's foot trefoil. You’ll experience a working countryside landscape featuring traditional sheep grazing and flower-rich meadows that have been preserved for decades.

We'll be doing a circular walk of approximately 7-8km. The pace will be slow and there will be frequent stops to observe and discuss the habitat and wildlife we see.

About Wild South London

Wild South London is a community group which aims to raise awareness of local biodiversity and promote conservation and appreciation of nature. Through walks, talks and hands-on workshops, the group will educate and inspire local people on topics such as sustainable foraging and identification of plants, animals and fungi - all while promoting the positive health and wellbeing impacts of engaging with nature.
