Spokes Fighting Strokes is a non-profit organization focused on helping those affected by a wide range of physical and mental disabilities on their journey to rehabilitation by utilizing recumbent trikes. Spokes Fighting Strokes has been touring the United States for four years, providing open recumbent trike riding clinics to stroke survivors, paraplegics, and those affected by neural degenerative diseases like M.S, Parkinson's, & Alzheimer's. This year, Dan's Wisconsin leg of the tour will have two adaptive cycling clinics, both of which are FREE to attend and open to the public, with the Stevens Point clinic taking place on July 18th at 1PM.
Hosted at Wildwood Park in Marshfield, these clinics will focus on introducing recumbent trikes to those looking for alternative methods to physical therapy. Dan Zimmerman, founder of Spokes Fighting Strokes, suffered a stroke in 2005 as a result of Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). By taking an interest in recumbent triking, he was able to get back outside and slowly regained movement in his arms and legs. Because of this, today Dan is able to travel the nation, introducing people across America to the therapeutic and easily accessible experience of recumbent triking.
Cycling, Dan says, has improved his health and more importantly, given him a purpose in life. He wants to raise awareness of HHT, the disease that killed his brother and mother and is present in Dan and his younger son. He also wants to raise awareness of stroke prevention and inspire other stroke survivors to fight back against the disease. He is eager to present to stroke survivors, folks with traumatic brain injuries (TBI), Parkinson's, and people with other disabilities and their support teams.
This event is free, but we do ask that you RSVP through the link below if you plan to attend so we can provide enough trikes for everyone, or install adaptive accessories ahead of time if need be. We have trikes outfitted to suit a range of disabilities, so please don't hesitate to reach out and see if we have something for you to try!
