The Instituto Cervantes, in collaboration with the University of Leeds, is pleased to present a special screening of the film Rafael as part of the SPLAS Film Club 2025-2026.
Rafael tells the story of a 42-year-old man facing a profound personal crisis. Living under the shadow of his father, Rafael struggles with guilt over rarely visiting his elderly mother, tension with his ex-wife who complains he doesn’t spend enough time with their daughter, and an unresolved commitment to his current girlfriend. His life takes an unexpected turn after suffering a minor heart attack, which leads to a reunion with Juan Carlos, a childhood friend who helps him revisit and make sense of his past.
This introspective drama explores themes of family, regret, reconciliation, and the challenges of adulthood. Through Rafael’s journey, the film offers a poignant reflection on personal growth and the importance of confronting one’s history to move forward.
