About this Event
Spitalfields is one of London's most fascinating and evocative areas.
It has a story of many ups and downs. It went from a Roman cemetery, to a medieval monastery, to a bustling merchant quarter, to an appalling Victorian slum. It also has a fascinating history of migration with many different groups and cultures leaving their mark on the area over the centuries.
Spitalfelds has, at times, a dark, seething underbelly, but more interestingly it has some of the most inspiring characters I have come across in London's history.
On this tour we will look at both sides of that story, whilst exploring its atmospheric alleyways, medieval ruins, stunning 18th century townhouses and pointing out the little details that many miss.
The tour will last roughly an hour and 45 minutes and starts by the fish pond on Bishops Square, not far from Liverpool Street Station.
