Spit it Out Cine Club: Friends on the Outside and Everything Worthwhilew is Done At Once, screening and Q&A

Join for an evening in partnership with the Scottish Documentary Institute (SDI) as we bring together two narratives of incarceration that expose the UK Pr*son system. Friends on the Outside by Annabel Moodie, complete with exhibition, and Everything Worthwhile is Done with Other People, by Rehana Zaman. With dedicated time for Q&A.

Annabel Moodie (she/her) is a mixed-media filmmaker based in Edinburgh working across documentary and experimental film, exploring how human interactions with plants and the non-human world can act as everyday resistance to systemic violence. A lover of foraging and DIY analogue processes. Friends on the Outside tells the story of an incarcerated man called Jamie who finds comfort inside by foraging for weeds and caring for birds. It questions why the UK Pr*son system is currently in its biggest expansion in more than a century, exposing naturalising language around this expansion. We welcome you to discover a multi-media exhibition created alongside the documentary by the filmmaker for the festival.

Rehana Zaman (she/her) is a London-based artist whose practice is concerned with the effect of multiple social dynamics on how individuals and groups relate. These narrative-based pieces, often deadpan and neurotic, are frequently generated through conversation and collaboration with others. Everything Worthwhile is Done with Other People takes up the conversations, experiences and freedom dreams of a group of women affected by the carceral state, as encountered through the UK government’s hostile environment policy and Pr*son system. This work began as a series of workshops led through Hibiscus Initiatives framed around questions of criminality, innocence and citizenship, perceived through the lens of gender, race and class.

Community Care

At SiO we don't believe in the idea of a safe space as we recognise in all spaces we can be harmed, triggered or feel discomfort from other people's experiences. Instead, we believe in informed spaces.

To ensure that the SiO festival is an informed, supportive and inspiring place to be, we have created these community guidelines and encourage all those participating in our events to read, follow and adhere to these measures to ensure an optimum outcome for all.

Traffic Lights

To help people emotionally prepare we have introduced a traffic light system to forewarn the likeliness of triggering content being discussed at our events.

Red = WILL provoke difficult conversations

Amber = LIKELY to provoke difficult conversations

Green = UNLIKELY to provoke difficult conversations (not guaranteed)

Please use this system as guidance only and if you have any further questions about the event just get in touch with our festival team at [email protected]

Spit it Out is an award-winning organisation (SCIO) dedicated to opening conversations around consent, mental health and healing through creativity, accountability and community care. We realise the overarching goals of our project through collaborating with our community in delivering free activities and resources. We work to create a lasting change in our community and create a support network among people who have endured trauma and mental health crises through an intersectional lens.
