About this Event
At St Philip's Centre, we believe that everyone who respects the rights of those around them should be free to live according to their own beliefs and values. We believe that our faith communities should be nurturing to those within them, welcoming to those outside them, and safe to all who encounter them - and should be able to expect the same in return.
We know that spiritual abuse is a plague in our religious institutions, our homes, our workplaces, and in any place that people meet and power is misused to restrict or force the direction of our spiritual lives. We know the extent of the damage it can do to individuals, to communities, and to whole societies.
We have invited Nell Hardy - survivor, activist, and founder of Response Ability Theatre, which this year produced 'I, Lord', a survivor-led play exploring modern cultures of spiritual abuse between people of the same faith, many faiths and no faiths - to lead a workshop for anyone with an interest in tackling spiritual abuse: whether from a survivor perspective, as an ally, as a faith leader, as a member of a faith, or through any other connection.
She will guide us through low-pressure creative stimulus exercises akin to those she used with survivors when developing the design for 'I, Lord', to get us thinking about what safe spiritual spaces look like, what spiritual needs we all share, what stands in the way of harmony on our journeys to meet them, and how we at the Centre and beyond can best put our resources into furthering awareness of spiritual abuse, strengthening interfaith safeguarding, and restoring the integrity and security of our communities.
Please note that though Nell is a theatre-maker, this will not be a 'drama' session: so anyone who baulks at the thought of acting, need not stay away! No experience in any artistic discipline is required: only curiosity, openness to your and others' imaginations, and passion for the subject is necessary to enjoy this workshop.
There is no cost for joining, and light refreshments will be available. It would be useful for us if you signed up so we can get a sense of how many to expect, but we will not turn you away if you just turn up on the day.
We hope to see you there - and please do pass on the invitation to anyone you think may be interested.
