Trance can be positive or negative. Positive trance is an advanced mystic state which enables the practitioner to act as a channel for highly-evolved spiritual intelligences, who are then able to use him or her as a channel for their wisdom. Negative trance is a dangerous state in which the practitioner has much less control, and is therefore to be avoided. Dr. George King entered a positive yogic samadhic trance state on numerous occasions and is undoubtedly one of the leading authorities in this little-understood field.
