Speaker: Negarra A. Kudumu
Title: What Awaits Us will be, Black
What awaits Us is the moniker for the conceptual lens of the reimagination of the African Diasporic Art collection. Curatorial Assistant, Sirene Martin is engaging in a temporal exploration of Black culture from the continent to the diaspora. Inspired by the notion of time’s spirality, as set forth by the Bakongo peoples of central Africa, this collection will be understood within the collision of the past, present and future. Negarra’s lecture will be an astute expansion within this school of thought.
Negarra A. Kudumu is an independent scholar and curator of contemporary art. Her curatorial interests focus on Afro-Surrealism, Black Abstraction, contemporary art from the Pacific Northwest, Africa, South Asia, and their respective diasporas. Her scholarly interests focus on African Diasporic spiritual traditions of the Americas namely Palo Monte, Conjure (also known as Hoodoo), and Haitian Vodou. More recently, her interests have taken a turn towards philosophy (Hegel), Christian theology (Barth), and notions of wretchedness and betrayal (Fanon) as a way to better explain the conditions within which the aforementioned traditions developed, the particular environment they sought to intervene upon, and the specific category of tools they used to intervene upon said environment.
