About this Event
This course develops the practitioner’s understanding of speech, language and communication skills in the early years. The course also covers how to identify children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) in this age group. Practitioners will be trained in how to use the Leeds SLCN Screening Tool, relevant to the age group that they work with, and how to identify the next steps in supporting children with SLCN in their setting.
Aims:
- To give an overview of how speech, language and communication skills develop and what differences may be seen in different neurotypes.
- To enable you to confidently use screening tools with children to identify those with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).
- To provide advice and strategies on supporting the development of speech, language and communication skills the relevant age group.
- To enable you to know when a child requires a referral to Speech and Language Therapy service.
Ideal for:
Any practitioners working with children of this age group; nursery staff, childminders, teaching assistants, teachers and SENCOs.
This course is particularly helpful for staff who are developing their skills in supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). These practitioners may be new to this role or needing a refresher on the most recent evidence-based practice.
Please note: This course will be run as an online training session via Microsoft Teams. When you book, you will receive information about how to access the training and how the session will be run.
Please note that our training courses and workshops are designed to be interactive, to ensure participants get the most from the session. With this in mind, we ask that you check to ensure that both your camera and microphone are working prior to the course.
Each person attending the training needs to purchase an individual ticket. Several participants may join the training from the same device but each participant must have purchased an individual ticket. Additional participants who have not bought a ticket are not allowed to sit and watch the training, either in or out of the camera view, and will be asked to leave.

- Less than 2 weeks before the start date – full charge applies.
Transfer policy:
- You may transfer your place on a course to an alternative participant or to an alternative date at any time prior to the start date but please inform us of the change.
- Failure to attend a course will not entitle you to transfer to another course/date and neither will you be able to transfer your place to others.
