Strengthening our core is one of the best things we can do for our overall well-being — and there are many Pilates exercises to add to our yoga practices that can help us get there. Join certified yoga and Pilates instructor Cheryl Jones for an evening Pilates class that will not only build strength and mobility but will also reduce stress and boost motivation.
This 60-minute class blends core-focussed mat Pilates with intentional stretching in order to help students build strength, improve posture, and release tension throughout the body. The class begins with mobility and breath-work to connect students to their cores and prepare our bodies for movement. From there, students will be guided through a series of Pilates exercises designed to strengthen the abdominals, back, hips, and glutes, while supporting stability and alignment. The very last segment of class focusses on deep stretching and lengthening, allowing the muscles to release after the strengthening work.
Our core is comprised of our rectus abdominis muscles (the muscles that run vertically along the front of our abdomens) our obliques (the muscles along the sides),
and our deep stabilizing muscles called the transverse abdominis, controlling our hips, lower back, and pelvic floor. Building strength in all these muscles groups keeps our bodies balanced and stable, maintains proper posture and exercise form, keeps our spines stable and safe, and helps us move in a more controlled and efficient way.
A strong core may also help prevent lower back pain.
All levels. No yoga or pilates experience necessary.
Unheated, but room may feel warm.
60 minutes.
