Beyond Baroque presenta la colección binacional Speaking in Tongues / Hablando en Lenguas: Poesía Mexa-Chicanx, integrada por cuatro libros que reúnen a ocho poetas mexas y chicanxs que escriben y se traducen entre el español, el inglés y el spanglish. La colección aborda temas como migración, territorio, frontera, lenguaje, política, memoria y amor.

Beyond Baroque hosts a presentation of the binational collection Speaking in Tongues / Hablando en Lenguas: Poesía Mexa-Chicanx, comprised of four books that bring together eight Mexa and Chicanx poets who write and translate one another across Spanish, English, and Spanglish. The collection engages themes such as migration, territory, borderlands, language, politics, memory, and love.

Durante la sesión se conversará sobre el origen del proyecto, iniciado en 2023 como una travesía literaria por distintas ciudades de México, el trabajo de traducción cruzada entre autorxs y las poéticas que surgen del cruce México-Estados Unidos
During the program, participants will talk about the origins of the project, begun in 2024 as a literary journey through different cities in Mexico, the work of translation crossing between authors and trans-border poetics between Mexico and The United States.

Minerva Reynosa (Monterrey, México; 1979) es poeta y gestora cultural. Ha publicado, entre otros libros, Una infanta necia, Emötoma (Premio Carmen Alardín 2006), La íntima de las cosas, Atardecer en los suburbios, Mammut & Jinba-Ittai y Lo mejor que damos. Antología personal. Su obra ha sido traducida al alemán, inglés, sueco, ruso y francés. Recibió el Premio Nacional de Poesía Clemencia Isaura 2020 y forma parte del Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte. Dirigió el proyecto Speaking in Tongues / Hablando en Lenguas.
Aideed Medina (Salinas, California; 1972) es autora chicana, poeta slamera y artista de spoken word. Fue nominada al Pushcart Prize 2021 y recibió el Horizon Award 2017. Es naturalista certificada de California y defensora comunitaria en organizaciones como Reforma del Valle Central y Mothers Helping Mothers. Su obra ha aparecido en diversas revistas y antologías. Es autora del libro 31 Hummingbirds y de Segmented Bodies / Cuerpos segmentados.
hector son of hector (Long Beach, California; 1987) vive en Oakland. Hijo de inmigrantes mexicanos, trabaja en un hospital mientras escribe poesía. Su colección 2020 en 12 piezas fue publicada en inglés en Statement Magazine (2021/2022). Su escritura aborda la experiencia hospitalaria durante la pandemia, la enfermedad, la rabia social y la exploración de la poesía chicana contemporánea.
Josiah Luis Alderete (San Francisco, California; 1970) es poeta chicanx, performer y curador. Miembro fundador de Palabras Abiertas / The Molotov Mouths, coordina la serie Latinx/Chicanx Speaking Axolotl en el Área de la Bahía. Autor de Baby Axolotls & Old Pochos (2022). Dirige junto a su hermana Medicine for Nightmares Bookstore & Galería en el Distrito de la Misión. Su libro Fuchi Faces de los Estados Jodidos explora el spanglish, la memoria y la experiencia pocha.
About the authors
Minerva Reynosa (Monterrey, Mexico; 1979) is a poet and cultural organizer. She has published, among other books, Una infanta necia, Emötoma (Carmen Alardín Prize, 2006), La íntima de las cosas, Atardecer en los suburbios, Mammut & Jinba-Ittai, and Lo mejor que damos. Antología personal. Her work has been translated into German, English, Swedish, Russian, and French. She received the 2020 Clemencia Isaura National Poetry Prize and is a member of Mexico’s National System of Art Creators. She directed the project Speaking in Tongues / Hablando en Lenguas.
Aideed Medina (Salinas, California; 1972) is a Chicana author, slam poet, and spoken word artist. She was nominated for the 2021 Pushcart Prize and received the 2017 Horizon Award. A certified California naturalist, she is a community advocate with organizations such as Reforma del Valle Central and Mothers Helping Mothers. Her work has appeared in various journals and anthologies. She is the author of 31 Hummingbirds and Segmented Bodies / Cuerpos segmentados.
hector son of hector (Long Beach, California; 1987) lives in Oakland. The son of Mexican immigrants, he works in a hospital while writing poetry. His collection 2020 en 12 piezas was published in English in Statement Magazine (2021/2022). His writing addresses the hospital experience during the pandemic, illness, social rage, and explorations of contemporary Chicanx poetry.
Josiah Luis Alderete (San Francisco, California; 1970) is a Chicanx poet, performer, and curator. A founding member of Palabras Abiertas / The Molotov Mouths, he curates the Latinx/Chicanx Speaking Axolotl reading series in the Bay Area. He is the author of Baby Axolotls & Old Pochos (2022). Alongside his sister, he runs Medicine for Nightmares Bookstore & Gallery in the Mission District. His book Fuchi Faces de los Estados Jodidos explores Spanglish, memory, and the pocho experience.
About Beyond Baroque
Beyond Baroque is one of the United States' leading independent Literary | Arts Centers and public spaces dedicated to expanding the public's knowledge of poetry, literature and art through cultural events and community interaction. Founded in 1968 as an experimental literary magazine, Beyond Baroque is based out of the original City Hall building in Venice, California. The Center offers a diverse variety of literary and arts programming including readings and workshops. The building also houses a bookstore with a large collection of new poetry books for sale.
Livestream: If you can’t join us in person the event will be livestreamed on at the scheduled time of the event. If you are tuning in this way, no ticket purchase is necessary.
If you are attending in person, ticket purchase is required. Tickets will be available at the Beyond Baroque bookstore on the day of the event, but we recommend registering in advance through Eventbrite. Masks are encouraged while inside our center. Please arrive early.
Event attendees are expected to behave in a respectful and considerate manner while in our space. Beyond Baroque reserves the right to remove individuals from our events, virtual or otherwise, if they are not respecting the space, staff, fellow attendees, or performers.
