Join us for our October Speaker Series lecture. This event is free and open to the public. We will meet in the McEntee Room at the Newport Public Library. Ryan Jones will present "The Soviet Union and the Secret Destruction of the World's Whales"
Russia entered the modern age of whaling under the leadership of Joseph Stalin, in 1932. A latecomer to whaling in comparison with the United States, Northern Europe, and Japan, the Soviets were determined not to follow their predecessors' legacies of unsustainable catches. What followed over the next 45 years, though, would be one of the most extreme examples of destruction in the ocean's history. This talk examines how and why Soviet whaling unfolded the way it did.
Ryan Tucker Jones is Ann Swindells Professor of History, University of Oregon. He is the author of Empire of Extinction: Russians and the Strange Beasts of the Sea, and Red Leviathan: The Secret History of Soviet Whaling.
