SUMMARY: The deep ocean, Earth’s largest habitat, holds over 98% of the planet’s livable space and supports remarkable biodiversity. Though remote, it plays a vital role in commercially important fish stocks, as well as regulating climate and nutrient cycles.
Though often considered the most pristine ecosystems left on Earth, the deep sea faces growing threats—from plastic and chemical pollution to warming and acidification. Now, the push for deep-sea mining would have profound impacts on the deep ocean over an enormous scale.
This talk will provide an introduction to deep sea mining and discuss the latest deep sea science and policy on the topic. Come learn more about this current issue, the deep sea, and the fascinating critters that call it home.
SPEAKER: Dr. Astrid Leitner, Assistant Professor

Astrid Leitner studies the impacts of abrupt and complex bathymetry across scales on the ecology and behavior of marine animals, with a special focus on the deep sea.
