“Speak of Me As I Am” is Solomon’s heartfelt homage to Paul Robeson — an athlete, scholar, actor, singer, and civil rights activist whose deep voice and fearless advocacy made him a global icon. The production combines song and storytelling, highlighting the music Robeson made famous, including traditional spirituals such as “Go Down Moses,” and “Deep River,” as well as anthems like “The House I Live In,” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Paul Robeson, the son of a runaway slave, won a four-year scholarship to Rutgers University and, as the only African American in attendance, graduated valedictorian after earning 15 letters in four different sports. A football All American for two years, Robeson was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in 1995.
He graduated Columbia Law School, appeared in 11 films including “Jericho” and “Proud Valley,” appeared in numerous stage musicals including “Showboat,” and became a popular concert, radio and recording artist. Robeson was one of the pioneers of the civil rights movement and was a fearless warrior for civil rights, not only for African Americans but also for workers and oppressed people around the world.
