Following on from the success of last year’s Referees & Judges Course, we are pleased to confirm the Southern Region Referees & Judges Workshop for 2026.This course is designed for:
KUGB members preparing to attend the Referees and Judges Course and qualify as a KUGB official, Instructors who wish to familiarise themselves with the KUGB rules of competition, Competors.
A number of attendees from last year’s course went on to successfully qualify as KUGB Officials, and the 2026 course will be run along the same proven lines.
The course will be led by Sensei Richard Naylor-Jones, a KUGB Nationally Qualified Referee with over 35 years’ experience. The syllabus will cover the KUGB rulebook through practical refereeing and judging of:
Jiyu Kumite (Freestyle)
Kihon Ippon Kumite (One-Step)
Kata
Referees’ and Judges’ uniform is optional. Tracksuits may be worn.
Please bring a whistle, pen, and paper if required.
Eligibility and preparation:
The minimum age to attend is 15 years
Attendees are strongly encouraged to study the KUGB Competition Rules in advance, available here:

Practical details:
Please bring a packed lunch, as there are no facilities nearby
A £10 fee (payable on the day) applies for attendees aged 16 and over, payable to the KUGB. Please book in via the KUGB App
