In-Person meeting for So Cal MUFON! Our guest speaker for June will be Joel Hynek. As well as being the son of Dr. J Allen Hynek, Joel is a 2-time Oscar Winner. He received his first Oscar for the Scientific and Engineering Design Award in 1987 for the design of a special effects camera that made the effects for the movie Predator possible. Joel received his second Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 1999 on the movie What Dreams May Come starring Robin Williams. The most memorable effect being the Painted World sequence.
You know the famous Bullet effect in the Matrix? Joel created that.
It is known as Bullet Time or the Matrix Effect. It is a visual effect that gives the impression of time slowing down or stopping, giving the viewer the feeling that time and space are detached. The term bullet time was first used in The Matrix in 1999. An introduction to the legendary Doug Trumbull during the filming of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, led to many collaborations. Joel eventually reinvented the Trumbull company to form Mass. Illusion a key project being What Dreams May Come – earning him his second Academy Award Joel studied physics at Carnegie-Mellon University before graduating from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science in Communication as a Film major. Joel began his visual effects career with R/Greenberg Associates in NYC where he created visual effects for Predator winning him an Academy Award. Joel and Paul, participated in the first FDA approved experiment through Stanford to regrow their thymus gland to reverse aging. Joel has worked on many blockbuster movies and TV - many which you have seen. We have a video to show you of Joel’s Special Effects and pictures to share with you of the Hynek brothers growing up and behind the scenes of the famous movies and TV they are an important part of.
