Explore the challenges of operational policing and its interface with health & safety, guided by the HSE’s ‘Striking the Balance’ framework.
About this Event

Join South Cumbria and North Lancashire IOSH Community for an insightful event exploring one of policing’s most complex challenges: achieving the right balance between operational demands and health and safety responsibilities.

This engaging presentation will unpack the realities faced by modern policing teams, where fast‑paced operational pressures often collide with statutory duties to protect staff, the public, and operational effectiveness. Using the Health and Safety Executive’s key publication, “Striking the Balance Between Operational and Health and Safety Duties in the Police Service,” we will examine how policing organisations can make proportionate, defensible decisions, particularly in situations where risk is dynamic and high‑stakes.

Through real‑world perspectives, discussion, and practical examples, we’ll explore:

  • The real challenges frontline policing teams face when balancing competing duties
  • What “striking the balance” means in practice for supervisors, commanders, and support teams
  • How to apply the HSE guidance to improve organisational decision‑making
  • The importance of clear risk ownership, leadership accountability, and effective communication
  • How health and safety professionals can better support operational policing without creating unnecessary barriers
