Join us for a special event celebrating South Asian History Month, presented by GLA, The London Union Learning Project, and The WEA's Trade Union Branch.
This event will provide a platform to explore the rich history and contributions of South Asians in the UK through engaging discussions and insightful presentations. The event is aimed at helping unions to celebrate, recruit, educate and empower their South Asian reps and members.
Please arrive by 9:30 AM for refreshments and to allow sufficient time for security checks, including bag searches and body scans. Your punctuality will ensure a smooth start to the day's activities.
Agenda: The full event schedule will include a variety of workshops, an opportunity to network, ask questions, and will feature contributions from notable speakers including:
· Rebecca Sixsmith-Hughes: Leading the TUC’s project for the next generation of Black workplace representatives and supporting, developing and empowering reps/members. Former Unite branch chair and full-time UNISON official.
-Abda Khan: a lawyer turned writer and author of the novels ‘Stained’ (2016) and ‘Razia’ (2019), and debut poetry collection ‘Losing Battles Winning Wars’ (2023). Her work has featured in various anthologies and publications. She currently has two novels in the pipeline. She writes commissioned pieces (short scripts, spoken word etc.), delivers creative writing courses, and produces and directs her own creative community projects. She is a Desi Blitz Arts Ambassador, a Lloyds Bank Women of the Future Ambassador, and she won British Muslim Woman of the Year in 2019.
· Indi Deol: Founding Director of DESIblitz, UK's largest online British Asian magazine, and leader in advertising, leadership development, and strategic business growth.
· Harjap Bhangal: Renowned as the "Immigration Guru" by the BBC, is a distinguished Immigration Solicitor with over two decades of experience. Mr. Bhangal is regularly featured on Sky News, BBC News, and other mainstream news channels. He champions social causes such as empowering women and supporting health initiatives. Through his weekly MATV TV show on the Sky platform and community engagement via his social media, he provides access to information and actively helps raise significant funds for charities such as Unique Home for Girls and DKMS (Delete Blood Cancer).
